‚Diese Vertonungen afro-amerikanischer religiöser Volkslieder (Spirituals) wurden komponiert mit der Vorstellung von eher jungen Stimmen, sind aber gleichermaßen geeignet für etwas ältere Ensembles. Obwohl es sich um einen Zyklus aus vier Stücken handelt, können diese auch einzeln oder in anderen Zusammenhängen aufgeführt werden.Jedes Stück hat dabei seine ganz eigene Stimmung. Das erste und letzte, There“s a Little Wheel a-Turnin“ in My Heart und Little David, Play on Your Harp, sind beide jubilierend und mit einer lebhaften rhythmischen Begleitung versehen. Das zweite Stück, Lit“l Boy, How Old Are You?, ist sehr nachdenklich und sollte daher nie im Tempo zu sehr vorangetrieben werden sondern sich so natürlich wie möglich entfalten. Das dritte Stück, This Little Light of Mine, ist ein in inniges und beschauliches Lied des Glaubens und Preisens.‘
