Emily Dickinsons anschauliches Gedicht beschreibt den Fortgang einer nicht näher bezeichneten Reise. Dabei hatte die junge Dichterin (sie verfasste das Gedicht im zarten Alter von 23) höchstwahrscheinlich die Reise des Lebens vor Augen gehabt. Die Musik spiegelt diese Idee wider, indem das Solo-Cello beginnt und das Stück dann graduell an Lautstärke und Intensität bis zu den letzten Takten zunimmt.
