‚Hinweise des Komponisten: Dieses in die Weihnachtszeit gehörende Lied erklingt traditionell bei der Boar“s Head Prozession des Queen“s College, Oxford. Im Laufe der Zeit haben auch andere Colleges in Oxford ihre eigen Boar“s Head Prozession veranstaltet (wie z.

B. St. John“s College), aber meines Wissen setzt nur das Queen“s College die Tradition auch heute noch fort. Die Version des Liedes, die am Queen“s College gesungen wird (mit den Strophen vorgetragen von einer Solostimme), ist auch im Oxford Book of Carols zu finden.

Die Geschichte hinter diesem Lied ist die eines Studenten, der auf einer Wanderung durch den Wald von einem Wildschein (engl. “boar“) angegriffen wurde. Er tötete die Bestie, indem er ihm ein Buch von Aristoteles in den Rachen schob. Der Kopf des Tieres wurde zurück ins College gebracht – zum anschaulichen Nachweis für die Kraft der Philosophie.
