Das Leben von Black Elk (1863-1950), einem heiligen Mann der Oflala-Indianer, die zum Stamm der Sioux gehören, überspannte die tragischen Jahrzehnte der Kämpfe gegen Custer am Little Big Horn, den Geistertanz und das Massaker in der Ortschaft Wounded Knee. Im Jahr 1930 machte sich der aus Nebraska stammende Dichter John G. Neihardt in das Pine Ridge Reservat auf, um dort einige der alten Quellen aufzuspüren, die Aufschluss über die großen spirituellen Traditionen der Sioux-Indianer geben. Er fand Black Elk als bereitwilligen Erzähler und befragte ihn während der nächsten zwei Jahre immer wieder. Der Text zu dem Lied The Sacred Hoop stammt aus dem bekannten Buch Neihardts, Black Elk speaks.
