‚Komponiert im Jahr 2015, wurde Stabat Mater von der Genesis Foundation für Harry Christophers und The Sixteen in Auftrag gegeben. Mit seiner Besetzung für gemischten Chor und Streichorchester ist das Werk die lang erwartete Fortsetzung von MacMillans frühem Meisterwerk Seven Last Words from the Cross (1993), das für die gleiche Besetzung komponiert wurde. Und so beginnt sein Stabat Mater tatsächlich mit dem Pianissimo des “ersterbenden Atems“, mit dem das frühere Werk so unvergesslich beschlossen wird. Verteilt auf vier Sätze hat Stabat Mater eine Gesamtlänge von 53 Minuten.‘
