Ward Swingle war Gründungsmitglied des legendären Vokalensembles Double Six im Paris der 1960er Jahre. Mit seinem anderen Ensemble, den Swingle Singers, interpretierte er die Werke J. S. Bachs im Scat-Gesang, der die Gruppe weltberühmt machte. Ihre frühen Aufnahmen gewannen unter anderem fünf Grammies. Give us this day ist die Vertonung eines Textes von Tony Vincent Isaacs, die für die Versari Singers und ihren Dirigenten Jeremy Backhouse komponiert wurde. Dabei handelt es sich um einen einfachen, homophonen, vierstimmigen Satz, der sich durch zeitlose Qualität auszeichnet. Zum Ausdruck gebracht wird eine Botschaft, die gleichermassen aktuell wie gewichtig ist: Give us this day / That we may cherish / The earth before it dies.
